FASHION AS A CONCEPT


 

TERMINOLOGIES AND ETYMOLOGIES OF FASHION


FASHION:- A style of clothing, hair, decoration, or behavior with respect to a time, culture or the surrounding is called fashion.

STYLE:- In fashion, an individual or a distinctive type of dress, coat, blouse or other items of an apparel or accessory. It is more of a distinctive appearance, typically determined by the principles according to which something is designed

eg:- casuals, formals etc.

COSTUME:- styled clothing that depicts a tradition or symbolizes a group

eg:- costume of Santa-Clause, a super hero etc.

SILHOUETTE:- The outline of a figure, mostly like a shadow.

CLASSICS:- All time fashion

FAD:- fashion that doesn't stay for long.

READY TO WEAR ( OFF THE RACK ) prêt à porter:- bulk amount of garments designed and marketed in standard size sold in stores.

COUTURE: It means "dress making", basically the design houses that make of high quality garments

eg: GUCCI, Louis Vuitton etc.

HAUTE COUTURE:- Garments which are made of high and fine quality material using fine stitching.

AVANT GARDE:- it means to be ahead of time. basically an innovative style of fashion

ATELIER:- a workshop or a place where people design garments

BOUTIQUE:- A small shop or store that sells fashionable garments and accessories.

HIGH FASHION:- Custom made high quality fashion products and garments.

BRIDGE FASHION:- Less designed and comparatively cheaper garments.

KNOCK OFFS:- Products made by copycat companies with fake and similar brand name.

CONSUMERS:- A person who buys and uses a merchandise.

CLOTHS:- Collective term for what is worn by the people of all ages and cultures.

CO-ORDINATE:- a full set of cloths worn together and bought as a single set.

eg.:- kids wear set, tuxedo etc.

SEPARATES:- cloths that are bought separately and can be worn with any others.

eg:- jeans, shirts etc.

SHORT GOODS:- Marchandise that have a short shelf lives.

eg:- beauty products etc

HARD GOODS:-Those with a long shelf life.

eg:- furniture etc.

WOVEN:- Made by Interlacing of yarns

eg:- sarees etc.

KNITTED:- Made by inter looming of yarns

eg:- sweaters, jerseys etc.

NON-WOVEN:- Made by compressing fibers.

WEIGHT:-Thickness and heaviness of of the fabric.

HANG:- feel of the fabric.
